About Me

My photo
I LOVE to design and to paint whimsical items that will put a smile on your face. Each day I share my simple life with you as I try to encourage, to inspire and sometimes JUST to make you smile as I recount my life growing up on a dairy farm! I've never had many material items in my life, BUT I have been blessed beyond words with love and encouragement from WONDERFUL Parents who instilled in me WHAT was important. I have had EVERYTHING that I needed and WAY too much of what I wanted. I am slowly learning to be a better person each day through my interactions with my friends on Facebook. Some day I hope to be as good as people seem to THINK I am! I am BLESSED! Welcome to my little corner of the world...Please stop by and visit often!

Food Friday

There is so much that I love about growing up on a farm.

There are so many memories.

I was raised in Middle Tennessee.  Tobacco was the money crop in my area…NO, we know better now, so please don’t make judgements…

This county was once the World’s Largest Dark Fired growing area.

Tobacco plants were started on a plant bed.  This was a gauze covering that would be “gassed” to kill the weeds and the seed would be sewn.  A tobacco seed is tiny, tiny!

When Daddy planted the plant bed, he would also sow his tomato plants, radish, green onions and leaf lettuce.

NOTHING heralded the coming of spring than when Daddy would walk in the back door holding a handful of lettuce, radish and green onions, for this meant it was time for Wilted Leaf Lettuce.

This is one of my most favorite food memories of all times!!  NOTHING tasted better to me than this…my heart is almost bursting right now from the memories!

Mother’s pretty blue eyes would light up and dance as she would exclaim, “oooooooooo”!  Mother had a gift for finding joy in the simply and common moments of life…I was blessed to learn this from her.

Mother would immediately put on ham to fry to make red eye gravy.

Cornbread was mixed to make flap jacks or (ho cakes).

Lettuce, radish and green onions were washed and placed on a platter, along with the small silver-handled knife.

One of the best memories that Mother gave us, was, no matter WHAT we had to eat, our table was always set with her Desert Rose Plates, our silverware (yes, the real silver), a napkin, and glasses for tea/water.  Most often, there was a centerpiece on the table with whatever happened to be blooming.  Bowls were used on the table, and never was a pot allowed to sit on the table.  A prayer was said before EVERY meal and we passed the food to each other…YES, pass to the right. (hmmmmm, I think…or is it to the left??  HA HA HA).  Manners were observed…there was no reaching for food, you ASKED to have it passed to you, with “pass the (fill in the blank), please.”  When we left the table, we placed our silverware onto our plates, and told mother we enjoyed our meal.  When we went to someone’s house, these same manners were observed, FOLLOWED by the ladies helping to clear the table and “do the dishes”!  NEVER, have I failed to help a hostess after a meal.

I snicker as I remember Mother asking one of us, “where are your manners.” We would usually say, “Under the table.” We would laugh, but we KNEW that we had been told to do better, and we best crawl under that table and find them!

Tonight, I am having Wilted Leaf Lettuce.

As the years have passed, I have learned that I can make a similar dish using bought items.  I usually try to buy leaf lettuce, but tonight, I am making do with Romaine Lettuce, already cut.

I have had a ham hock boiling in water for 90 minutes, making a wonderfully flavored “gravy”, that will also serve to make a pot of beans at another time.

While the cornbread in cooking in the old iron skillet, that is probably at least 60 years old, I will cut up the radish and green onions!

Back in the day, we used Red Eye Gravy that was made when the country ham was fried.  Mother always fried the ham first, then added water to let the ham tenderize and cook out the salt that was used to preserve the ham.  This is why so many people don’t like country ham, but if you boil the meat in water, much of the salt is removed, leaving yummy meat.

Red Eye Gravy would often have a teaspoon of coffee added to it…

I HOPE this will be as good as I think it will be!

YEEEEEEEESSSSS….it was good!!

Another moment of realizing just how blessed my life has been and is!  My parents gave up monetary things in order to spend time with us, but NEVER did we want for anything.  Every single need we had was met.  We were taught the importance of hard work, making do with what you have, and always being thankful for what you had.  God was first in our lives and I am grateful that they loved me enough to make me do things that I would choose not to do, if given a choice, because, in life, we sometimes do things in life that we don’t want to do, but it usually doesn’t hurt us!  I think my life was better by having parents who were blessed to be able to do what they loved…

ALWAYS take time to do things for YOU…feed your soul.  When YOU are happy, then you are able to do more for others, and after all is said and done, we are to SERVE…

Sorry, but I don't think you can have too many pictures of cornbread straight out of the oven!!

If you were here, I would serve you some Wilted Leaf Lettuce!

May you have blessings in your day that will soften your heart and cause you to sing PRAISES!...I am simply blessed to create~~charlotte♡

WHAT a FEBRUARY! Wednesday, February 25, 2015

Look at those EARS flying in the wind...
Oh, my furbaby is SO SO HAPPY!!

>
This is the wheat field that is behind my house...just a few feet from our back door.

What a difference a few days can make...MANY people say that IF you don't like the weather, just wait and it will change...WELL, of COURSE it will, but sometimes it REALLY changes...

Charcaol was having SO MUCH fun running...

This was a BEAUTIFUL Saturday in Middle Tennessee...The weather was 67 degrees and not a cloud was in the sky!

There is ALWAYS time to stop and smell the roses when you are a  puppy...OR at least sniff at the ground!

These pictures were taken on February 6th.  The next day, the temperature FELL to freezing...it remained COLD all week and the ground was frozen...THEN this is what happened on February 15....

This is the back porch...hmmm...I think BIG FOOT came to visit
At about 3 am EARLY on Monday morning, sleet started to fall...Then some ice...then some sleet...then some snow...then....sigh...

Big Foot STRIKES again!
This is the same field...but OH, how beautiful!!
We ended up getting about 4 inches of STUFF~~ice, sleet, snow!!
This is the BIG Tobacco barn...
I LOVE the look of freshly fallen snow...
everything is so CLEAN and CRISP!
This shows more of the same field...our property goes into the woods...There was a tenant house at the edge of the woods!

That is our road...see it? huh, huh?  Nope, me either...LOL...
crunch....crunch...crunch...ROFL...
I LOVE to see the bird's footprints in the snow...
it is a reminder to BUY birdseed...LOL...

This is day 5...This was after an ENTIRE DAY of weather above freezing!!  It looks like there is NO HOPE!!

I am ONLY about 1 mile from the STATE road that is CLEAR all the way into town, I am sure...but THERE is a BIG curve on a slight hill to get to the end of the road!!  HOLD ON TIGHT!!!
This is the MORNING of Day 6...It looks pretty HOPELESS, still...BUT IT DID melt and I got to go to town that evening!!  It was like seeing a NEW WORLD!  People who didn't SIMPLY TALK TO me...roads with the freedom to go MOST anywhere I wanted...Fast FOOD restaurants...It was WONDERFUL...

I LOVE living in the country and would have it no other way, BUT there is ALWAYS a swap-off!  I get frustrated at those who CHOOSE to live WHERE they want (on big hills, curves, outside the city limits) and THEN complain when things don't go their way...We as humans tend to be that way...We WANT what we WANT when we WANT it...sigh...EVERY choice has a consequence!!

I am SO THANKFUL for all those who worked so hard during this time of inconvenience!  Thank you to the Electric Company who worked to keep my lights on and who got out in this AWFUL weather to repair the problem...I was ONLY without electricity for about 2 hours and I am SO GRATEFUL...

To the Policemen, Firemen, EMTs, Road Crews, Medical Personal, Water Company, and THOSE who had to SACRIFICE their time, sleep and SAFETY because of so many SELFISH people who thought of NO ONE but themselves...THANK YOU...I APPRECIATE YOU!!!

To the Mother/Son who was killed on the interstate when a truck hit them as they were stopping to help someone else, I PRAY God will send someone to stand in the gap for the husband and sister (daughter)...NO GREATER LOVE hath a man than to lay down his life for his fellow man...

I pray for those who are STILL in the path of the storms...
Those who are weary...

LIFE is filled with storms...I HOPE you each KNOW the MASTER of the WIND...Thank You, God, for the BEAUTY of the EARTH...for the SEASONS, and for LOVING ME when I am SO VERY unlovable...I wish...Blessings to YOU...~charlotte♥

Daddy's Saw...Tuesday, March 18, 2014

I thought I would share the cross-cut saw that Mother painted for my Daddy...

Mother most ALWAYS had great meaning behind everything that she did...This saw was no exception.  Mother would sneak off to Aunt Becky's to paint this for Daddy...He WONDERED why she was spending so much time at Aunt Becky's, BUT as long as he got fed, he didn't really mind...Mother and Daddy trusted each other and they had great respect BOTH for themselves and for each other.

On the left side of the saw, Mother painted Daddy's Tobacco barn that is located behind our house...I would LOVE to go with Daddy to hold the light when he would go to check the fires when we had tobacco that was being fired...The barn is BIG and I would love to see the dancing coals shimmering in the darkness of the night...I was always amazed at how Daddy could back a wagon into the barn since I hate to back up and can't "back back down the lane" as Aunt Maude used to say!  lol...Isn't it funny the small insignificant things that we remember and that bring a smile to our faces...Seldom is it EVER the big stuff we remember...the small simple things are the BEST...

The next thing that Mother painted was our house.  Daddy came to live with Uncle Bud and Aunt Jenny when he was 22 months old when his Mother died of pneumonia.  Daddy lived here until his death at 80 in 2003.  The house was built in 1913 and had MANY remodels including a new den/kitchen in 1962.  Mother was NOT allowed to come home UNTIL the room was finished when she had me...She spent 10 days in the hospital...BUT NOT because the room wasn't finished, but because Dr. Stone KNEW she needed the rest and would get NONE when she went home with me, a brother 2 years older and another brother 10.5 years older AND 3 people past 80!  WHEW...our house was BUSY!

Mother painted our church next...this was BEFORE the last addition that added a gym, elevator, more rooms, a parlor, new carpeting and paint...that makes me sad because the church is almost dead now and WAS FULL of life...When Mother and Daddy got married, Mother didn't care WHERE they went to church, she just wanted them to be TOGETHER and to worship TOGETHER.  OK...here is my FAMOUS line:  "Mother was a Baptist and Daddy was a Christian...UNTIL he married Mother...NOW they are Cumberland Presbyterians"~~ROFL...Daddy did NOT want to join the Baptist Church BECAUSE he refused to be re-baptized...He said that IF his baptism was GOOD enough for God, then it should be GOOD ENOUGH for any church...hmmm...THAT is a discussion for another DAY...BUT mother said that it would be best for them to find another denomination that was different for BOTH of them and they did...They BOTH served faithfully their entire life...Daddy was a deacon for MANY years and Mother sang in the choir until the LAST time she was able to attend church.  Both of them are buried behind the church and I will one day join them there.

The last picture that Mother painted was the house where Daddy was born and that is Him standing on the porch.  Daddy's Father was a sharecropper and this house was located on the Borthick Farm...This is a special picture!  Daddy had one sister and two brothers. They all died in the order of their birth at the age of 80.

This is such a special piece and I find great comfort when I look at it.  Mother painted every stroke with love...and Daddy was proud of it.  I can remember the day that Daddy died, I would sit in His chair and look at the saw and would remember WHAT a GREAT MAN he was and HOW blessed I was...

Mother didn't learn to paint until she was about 51, which is my age now!  I have such a creative and talented family...I'm glad that I was encouraged to try new things and that I got so much support for what I did...I was SO lucky to be able to do craft shows for MANY years with my parents...WOW...I'm a LUCKY GIRL!

Have a great day and TRY something NEW this week...Be the little TRAIN that COULD...I think I can...I THINK I can...I CAN...Blessings to YOU...~charlotte♥

Spring on the Farm, Wednesday, March 12, 2014

It Seems that SPRING might be on its way to Middle Tennessee

Once the buttercups start to bloom,
the promise of Spring becomes a reality

Sure, we will STILL have several cold days ahead.
We have several MINI WINTERS...
some say we have 7, but I don't know...
Everyone you Ask, tells of a different Winter...
What DICTATES the certain Winter
depends on WHAT is Blooming...
We have: Dogwood, Redbud, Locust, and Blackberry

In Middle Tennessee, Spring USUALLY means
TORNADOES and Storms....

Spring works SO HARD to AWAKEN...

We Each encounter STORMS in our lives...NO ONE is IMMUNE
BUT it sure is EASIER When we
LEARN to DANCE in the STORMS

Before the month is over, the corn will be planted
We will THEN start Praying that the WEATHER will allow our crops to grow to fruition...
We HOPE...We TRUST...We BELIEVE...WE PRAY...
THIS is WHAT I LOVE about Being raised on a FARM...
We have NO CONTROL over the weather...
We have NO CONTROL over the harvest...
WE have NO CONTROL over the prices...

BUT we RELY on our FAITH...
We LOVE the Land...
We respect the Land...
We are CARETAKERS for the Land...

I AM GRATEFUL to have been raised on a FARM
I think it has taught me WHAT IS IMPORTANT...
I think FARMING has taught me how to treat people...
I think FARMING has taught me how to LIVE...
We did NOT have money...
BUT BOY, were we RICH!!
I am BLESSED beyond WORDS to have been RAISED by PARENTS who GOT TO DO WHAT THEY LOVED!
That I think is WHY my LIFE was so GREAT...

The BEST gift you can GIVE your family is to BE HAPPY!
Celebrate LIFE EVERY DAY~~Blessings to YOU...~charlotte♥
