About Me

My photo
I LOVE to design and to paint whimsical items that will put a smile on your face. Each day I share my simple life with you as I try to encourage, to inspire and sometimes JUST to make you smile as I recount my life growing up on a dairy farm! I've never had many material items in my life, BUT I have been blessed beyond words with love and encouragement from WONDERFUL Parents who instilled in me WHAT was important. I have had EVERYTHING that I needed and WAY too much of what I wanted. I am slowly learning to be a better person each day through my interactions with my friends on Facebook. Some day I hope to be as good as people seem to THINK I am! I am BLESSED! Welcome to my little corner of the world...Please stop by and visit often!

Serendipity Sunday: Memories

I was raised in a Cumberland Presbyterian Church (CP).

It is a very tiny denomination.  Collectively, we aren’t weird…(some of us are cra-cra, though)

I was taught about Doctrine…the Bible…Missions…

What I have always loved about “my church” was that we KNEW we didn’t own this thing called RELIGION.

We sang “Whosoever Will”, and we really meant it.

We have an open altar…open communion table…anyone who believes in Christ is welcomed to partake…we don’t check “membership cards”…LOL

We believe in the Apostle’s Creed, The Lord’s Prayer, The Old and The New Testament, that Jesus is the Son of God, That God is Father, Son and Holy Ghost (ok, I just giggled because, well, I think I have been painting too much Halloween stuff…), so, basically, we believe the BIBLE…

We were a very quiet church, which I LOVED because after having a long week of NOISE, it was so wonderful to go into the House of the Lord and sit in the quiet to worship Him in Holiness…to BE STILL and KNOW… Being quiet (or LOUD) is in no way a measuring stick of one’s belief!

We believe that ANYONE can serve God, and no, you do NOT have to have a penis to Preach, to Teach or to Serve!

Well, if anyone has gotten this far and isn’t TOO offended, I will try to be on my best behavior.

I have the same email address that my mother had, and I won’t bore you with THAT story, because I have others to cause plenty of boredom for now.  Because of that, I get her updates of NEWS from the Denomination.

On May 26, I read that a classmate from Bethel had died.  I didn’t know her well, because she was there to get her MRS degree~~LOL…I was, however, friends with her husband, a CP minister, because I played the piano at a small church where he preached outside of Martin, TN each week.  BOY, howdy, I learned that MANY things can be placed in a person’s nose to cause humor (well, to SOME people)…French fries, pens, pencils, straws…sigh  Oh, how I shuddered on Sunday Morning when he picked me up to go to church and he had a friend with him…it just gave fuel to the fire of misbehavin’!

What I did know about Rhonda was that she was so sweet and kind.  She always smiled at me. THAT is a good memory to have.

Then, on July 18 (strangely enough, the anniversary of my parents wedding), I read that Carolyn Jackson had died.  She and my mother were the bestest of friends!  They were forever getting into something together.  They were sewing buddies and traveling to convention buddies.  She and Mother compiled the only (that I know about) denominational Cookbook to raise money for missions.  Carolyn did NOT want anyone to know her age, but one year, her son threw a birthday party for her and the cat was out of the bag.  She handled it pretty well~~LOL…Oh, how I loved her and how special she was to momma.  Her 98 years were full!!

This was taken in front of The Log Cabin.  It is a replica, of the replica (ROFL) of the Log Cabin that is located at Montgomery Bell Park in Dickson, TN...it is the birthplace of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church that came out of the GREAT REVIVAL...We left the Presbyterian Church because we did NOT believe in predestination....I am the one on the steps...Funny to see that 10 of these people went on to serve as Ministers/Christian Education (some of us got over it, too...LOL)

Last Monday morning, I opened my email and almost dropped my phone when I read about the death of Rev. Patrick Fleming.  He was driving back to his home in Arkansas after taking his daughter to Bethel for her final semester, and killed in a single vehicle accident.

Pat and I were in Balladeers together.  He had married our friend, Janiece, and had two children.  They were divorced and he was recently newly married.

I thought back to those days at Bethel.  I do not want to give the impression that we were the best of friends.  I will say that when you are crammed into a 26 seat bus, traveling for hours, and spending countless hours practicing and memorizing music, you get to know each other pretty well!  While there were people in the group who did not like each other, I can honestly say, that we all managed to get along pretty well, AND you found a way to stay away from each other….ME?  I plopped myself in the back of the bus, and sat on the music box!  ROFL…funny, that soon became the card playing section of the bus…LOL

Pat had demons.  He had a temper that scared me.  He didn’t always treat my friend, Janiece,  like I thought he should, and that frustrated me.  His father was a CP Pastor and my mother knew him.

We often laughed that so many of us in Balladeers were “CP Royalty”…Many of our parents were very active on the denominational level and they knew each other…We would laugh after a concert, when some lady would come flying outside to find “Martha’s daughter”…they were forever getting me and Elinor (Lita’s daughter) confused, because we both had black hair!  I got pointed at a whole bunch!  =)

Recently, I was chatting with another friend from Bethel and he said something about CP ROYALTY…I laughed and said that I was once considered to be that…He laughed and said, “yeah, right”…When I told him who my mother was, he gasped, apologized and said he never knew!!  He said I qualified…lol

Times have changed…we have changed…

Pat sent me a FB friend request several years ago, and it was good to “see” him.  NOW, as I have spent a week REMEMBERING moments from the past, I am thankful that I got the opportunity to MEET the new and improved PATRICK.  He has struggled.  He has fought the demons.  He had started living life LOVING life.  He made certain that Janiece was able to attend their daughter’s Senior Voice Recital.  I was glad that I had the opportunity to chat with him and to get to KNOW him.

I am glad that each of us has the opportunity to be BETTER that what we once were.

I am glad that Patrick fought the good fight and that he now lives with God in Paradise.

Music has always been such an important part of my life.  It has given me opportunities that I never imagined.  It makes me sad that I no longer play and sing, but things happen and life moves on and you adapt and do the best you can!  One day, I hope that money blessings will fall on my head and I will be able to either repair my piano, or get a good quality keyboard, but other things must be repaired, first~~ROFL…but I am at peace with it, for now.

So, though it seems I have shared only sadness, I wrote this to remind us all, that MEMORIES are a blessing.

Sometimes, we make choices and that is all we have…

I have been blessed this week to recount special times with special people and that has been a serendipity moment(s) for me.

My prayers are with all who mourn, but I am assured by reading the Bible, that THEY SHALL be comforted.

I love God, who has thought of everything.  While I sometimes think He doesn’t hear me and He doesn’t care and He will NEVER give me what I need, I am slapped back into reality, and again reminded that He NEVER forsakes me, He NEVER stops listening to me, and He will ALWAYS provide my needs (not wants)…He is my Shepherd and He continues to lead me into Green Pastures, beside still waters, feeding me before the enemy (Satan) and as Kat says, “just showing off!”

NOW, to remember to FOLLOW Him and to TRUST HIM…

Thank you, Dear God, for my friends…for the memories…and for loving me, anyway, when I don’t deserve it.

I am so blessed…~~charlotte♡

Music Tuesday, December 2, 2015

I can think of no other season where Music is such an important part of setting the atmosphere…Who doesn’t crank up the radio when their favorite song comes on the radio…Who doesn’t longingly wait to hear their favorite song for the first time of the season…WHO doesn’t reach for the volume to turn down that song that has been heard one too many times, weeks ago!!

I got into the car on Friday night to go get Chinese food for supper and when the Christmas music came on as I turned the switch to the car, I just sat and smiled.  As I was driving though, WHAT was played but that annoying version by Clay Aiken of “Mary Di-you know”!!  ARG….DID has a D on the end of it…I appreciate his attempting to NOT say “Mary DID JEW KNOW” like most every other version does, but COME ON…did you not LISTEN to the final cut before releasing…heavy sigh…(sorry, you are going to find that version really annoying now that I have pointed that out…)

Mother did her best to teach us proper grammar and the pronunciation of words, and when I would say, “DID JEW KNOW…” she would say that she was not Jewish…I looked at her and would try again…FINALLY, me being the smartie pants that I have always been, I got a come back to her comment. I informed her that Christ was Jewish and I was simply trying to honor our heritage! …silence…laughter…whew…I didn’t get punished this time for “sassing”!

OK…back to the topic of GOOD and POSITIVE…but it was funny that I would hear the one song I didn’t WANT to hear EVER.

Tonight, as I watched the children singing LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH on TV, it brought tears to my eyes to THINK of the horrible things that are happening in our world.  I prayed for each child as they showed them with their smiling faces and thought that somehow, music seems to make things better. I wondered how music had possibly changed the lives of some of those children.  I HOPED that somehow, someone would hear their message and it would start a change in their heart...I prayed for safety for those children...

Music has always been an important part of my life.  I started piano lessons in the 3rd grade and then piano/organ and then voice lessons…I am somewhat of a music snob, but the funny thing about me is how I love LIVE bluegrass music…No, I don’t want to listen to it on the radio or as a recording, but I love to watch the musicians and how they seem to know EVERY bluegrass song ever written.

For several years, we would travel one weekend to Norris Dam and stay in the rustic cabins (ok, that meant there was no remote control for the TV~~the NERVE!!) and would attend 2 days of the Appalachian Homecoming Festival.  We would meet our friends, Mr. Mack and Miss Stella and Mr. Mack’s sister and brother-in-law, John Bruce. I would usually fix one meal at our cabin for the “old folks” to sit and visit and then one night, we would go to the local restaurant, Golden Girls.

The musicians would come to the restaurant and after they ate, they would gather in each of the rooms and would play and sing…it was AMAZING.

When you attend events like this, you will often see the same people year to year and will usually strike up a nice little chat with them.  While we didn’t ever speak to this lady, she would appear each year, wearing a flour sack dress…I am not sure of the significance of that, but ALWAYS she wore a flour sack dress…AND she drove a Mercedes…hmmmmmm….no judgment…just strange!

I think it was the last year that we attended, we ended up in the same little room that John Hartford was in.  He wrote GENTLE ON MY MIND (made most popular by Glen Campbell) and won about 4 grammys…read about his fascinating life if you aren’t familiar with him.  He was an amazing musician and a fun character.

Being raised close to Music City, we were always taught to leave musicians alone…I can’t count how many famous people I have sat next to and simply smiled at them so they could enjoy their time with friends or family without being bothered.

On this night, as John Hartford and LeRoy Troy were jamming, in walked FLOUR SACK LADY.  She would not leave them alone.  She kept asking for a song and would try to give some words and on and on and she would NOT go away.  It was OBVIOUS that she was annoying Mr. Hartford, but he remained kind and tried to get rid of her…What is funny about the song she was describing, I am CERTAIN that he knew it, but for whatever reason, he kept insisting he didn’t know what she was talking about…

As we were watching this unfold, and go on too long, Daddy leaned back, crossed his arms on his chest and said to me where our table could hear it, “I KNOW that Song, but I AIN’T gonna help her or sing it!!”  WE immediately burst into laughter.  Being inquisitive, I asked Daddy what it was and he told me, but I had never heard that song, but I FILED it away for future reference.

A couple of weeks later, I was to play the piano at church by myself since the organist attended a yearly reunion.  I picked my songs carefully, as I often tried to do and I found a VERY SPECIAL SONG for the Postlude.  As the service came to the end, and the Benediction had been delivered, I started playing, “Life is Like a Mountain Railroad.”  I saw Mother stifle a laugh as the choir left the sanctuary.  Daddy came up to me after the service with that silly grin of his and said, “Whatcha playin’, Gal?”

It became a great joke with Mother and Daddy and me.  I played it several times from then on to remember the fun times we shared.  We had this song played when they brought Daddy’s casket into the funeral.  I KNOW he was smiling in Heaven.  If you haven’t heard this song, go to You Tube…I like the Stephen Curtis Chapman version that is there.

I shared on my Facebook post a few days ago, that Daddy’s Favorite song was “Give the World A Smile Every Day”.  He would sing this in the car many times as we would be going somewhere and he would attempt to sing all 4 parts~~it was hilarious and he would get that silly grin of his as we watched him giving us a smile…We had this song played when they took the casket out at his funeral…WHAT better testimony to his life!!  Again, go to You Tube and watch The Cathedrals sing this song if you haven’t heard it!  You WILL smile.

I wonder how I got so blessed to have the parents I had while others got crappy parents…I don’t understand WHY I was given the BEST that Life had to offer while others didn’t…It took me a long time to realize that not everyone had parents like mine.  Oh, how blessed we were!

I am giving THANKS today for the GIFT of Music…to be raised in a home with meaningful SONGS is truly a gift that I do not take for granted…

BE the MUSIC for someone today…Sing your LIFE in perfect harmony with the qualities that are pure…honorable…kind…loving…beautiful…supportive…Make a JOYFUL NOISE!!

I wish blessings for you…~charlotte

I LOVE the OLD Hymns... Sunday, May 31, 2015

I was raised in a house with music…GROWING up, VERY few days were without Mother singing and/or humming a hymn…I remember getting so irritated that she would sing the SAME song over and over…sometimes the same line…over and over…

My oldest brother, Bob, has a beautiful tenor voice. Brian, the middle child, is blessed with a gorgeous bass voice.  Mother sang alto.  When she was young, she would sing often with her twin sister, at revivals.  Daddy sang lead, although he could harmonize.  I was given an alto/soprano voice.  Mother would sing along with me when I young to teach me to stay on key while she would sing harmony.

Art by Amanda
I started taking piano in the third grade, along with Brian, who only took a few years because he needed to do BOY THINGS…sad, really, because HE was the one who had the gift for piano.  Mother searched for a teacher who was interested in teaching us to play for our own enjoyment, and well, for CHURCH…LOL…She believed, and taught us well, that ALL our gifts were to be used for the GLORY of GOD!

I have often said that I was born into the wrong generation, because I much prefer OLD Songs…songs that I could understand the words…songs that spoke to me…songs with a melody…songs with words that could inspire or could share an emotion that I UNDERSTOOD…I am an old soul…

What I REALLY love and have come to appreciate are the OLD HYMNS…I was raised on them…NOW that I have lived life and experienced every emotion imaginable, these hymns speak to ME…I HATE how money has been wasted to make them POLITICALLY correct~~HATE IT!  So much of the meaning has been lost and it has taken away one’s ability to SEARCH for what that song means…It saddens me that so many of the young’ens have no CLUE about the OLD HYMNS…Change is ok…it makes me sad sometimes, but LIFE has to move on…I wish it could take along the GOOD STUFF with it a little bit more…

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate some of the new songs and ditties…I only WISH they could have found more than just ONE LINE to sing over and over…sigh…

The old songs spoke of HELL…we don’t find churches speaking much of HELL anymore…heck, SOMEBODY might get mad and leave or not feel GOOD about themselves…AND WHAT is entertaining about that?  We have dummied down God’s Word so that EVERYONE will be HAPPY…heavier sigh…Sometimes we NEED to be pruned to grow big and strong!! My parent’s sure didn’t hesitate to PRUNE me and I am SO THANKFUL they cared enough to NOT always tell me I was right…that there were rules I HAD to follow…that MY OPIONION was simply that~~my opinion and that in no way made me RIGHT, but it also didn’t make me wrong, either!

I UNDERSTAND the POWER OF MUSIC…it is universal.  I had a conversation with a friend, who has his Doctorate from Vandy and taught at the college I attended and is a part-time, well, he PREACHES… one day we were talking about our frustrations with churches.  I made the statement that SO MANY PREACHERS THINK their sermon is the MOST important part of worship and Well, no need to continue with what all we said, BUT he made the statement that PASTORS are the most EDUCATED and most UNDERPAID workers…I sat there and started to think of the 12 years I took piano, the 4 years of organ lessons, the hours of practice I spent, the four years of voice lessons, the HOURS of practicing for the singing group I was in…hmmmmmmm…I was at church EVERY SUNDAY to play the piano, EVERY SUNDAY for choir practice, EVERY worship service~~morning and night…staying after choir practice to practice special music with the organist…music classes for children/youth…VBS director…Sunday School teacher…class parties…YEP…I was OVERPAID…I didn’t receive a SINGLE penny and NEVER did I get a thank you from the Pastors or from our board of Elders…and when I quit, NOBODY cared at all…YEP…OVERPAID, but then, THAT is not why I did it!! BOY HOWDY!!!

My Mother’s tattered Bible and several hymn books are within reach of where I paint!  They are my reference books of WHAT is important in my life…the basis of WHO I am and WHO I belong to!

NOW, that I am older, I UNDERSTAND why Mother sang the same song/lines over and over…it was her PRAYER…she was asking and seeking DIRECTION…I find myself doing the same thing…I have lost count of the many times I have sung, “Lead me Lord, Lead me in Thy righteousness.  Make THY WAY plain, before my face.”

Those who were raised on the old hymns, I simply need to say a LINE and your mind will take off~~it doesn’t take much to rekindle the heart’s memory…

I NEED Thee, O, I NEED Thee…EVERY Hour I NEED THEE…

Make Me a BLESSING, to SOMEONE today…

Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound…

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Tune my heart to sing Thy Grace…

On a Hill, far away…

I come to the Garden Alone, while the dew is still on the Roses…

Holy, Holy, Holy…Lord, God, Almighty…

All to Jesus, I surrender…(No. 316 in our hymnal as a child)

Down at the Cross where my Savior died…

Mercy there was great and GRACE WAS FREE, Pardon there was multiplied to me…There my burdened soul found LIBERTY at Calvary!!!

When the Roll is Called up Yonder I’ll be there!

Wonderful Grace of Jesus…

Great is Thy Faithfulness!  Morning by morning new mercies I see!

I MISS the old songs and I miss playing and singing…BUT these TRUTHS are in my heart and my service has changed to another of my gifts…I HOPE today that you will have a SONG in your heart…I HOPE that you will reflect on the words you were taught as a child and NOT depart from them…AND if you were not taught as a child, I HOPE that you will SEARCH because what you will FIND will change your heart…

…Blessings to YOU…~charlotte
